The collection of photographs below were taken at the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. In 79CE, the city was engulfed when a nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted killing 16,000 people and covering the city in 19 feet (6 metres) of ash and other volcanic debris. The city remained preserved for centuries before its ruins were discovered in the late 16th century. Today, the city of Pompeii has been declared a world heritage site and attracts many visitors from all around the world.
